Partial Reductive Paraphrase: Toward More Transparent Requirements Kimberly S. Wasson Department of Computer Science University of Virginia 151 Engineer’s Way Charlottesville, VA 22904-4740 [email protected] Partial Reductive Paraphrase (PRP) is a method for constructing explications, a specific kind of definition, for use in requirements documents. Explications avoid common weaknesses of definitions produced by other methods and encourage effective representation of the information most critical to the application domain at hand, allowing better understanding on the part of requirements users. This paper introduces PRP and demonstrates how it is used to construct explications of concepts and present them for accessibility to users. PRP explications are provided for concepts drawn from industrial requirements documents and are then evaluated relative to analogous definitions produced by other methods. The PRP explications are shown to be free of specific faults that otherwise result. Finally, means by which PRP can be integrated into the requirements process are addressed.

Systematic and transparent inclusion of ethical issues and recommendations in clinical practice guidelines: a six-step approach

BACKGROUND Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), a core tool to foster medical professionalism, differ widely in whether and how they address disease-specific ethical issues (DSEIs), and current manuals for CPG development are silent on this issue. The implementation of an explicit method faces two core challenges: first, it adds further complexity to CPG development and requires human and finan...

Fine Bruhat Intersections for Reductive Monoids

Taylor, Dewey Terese. Fine Bruhat Intersections for Reductive Monoids. (Under the direction of Mohan S. Putcha.) Fine Bruhat intersections for reductive groups have been studied by several authors in connection with Kazhdan-Lusztig theory, canonical bases and Lie Theory. The purpose of this thesis is to study the analogous intersections for reductive monoids. We determine the conditions under w...

Paraphrase-Supervised Models of Compositionality

Compositional vector space models of meaning promise new solutions to stubborn language understanding problems. This paper makes two contributions toward this end: (i) it uses automaticallyextracted paraphrase examples as a source of supervision for training compositional models, replacing previous work which relied on manual annotations used for the same purpose, and (ii) develops a contextawa...

The Role of Mental Imagery in Understanding Unknown Idioms

In studies of the cognitive processing of idioms, the role of mental imagery in understanding idioms remains a controversial issue. Cacciari and Glucksberg (1995) conducted an experimental study to investigate whether generating mental images of idioms can facilitate their comprehension. Their results appeared to reject both the possible connection between the literal mental image of an idiom a...

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Darin James Trobaugh for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering presented on July 1, 1998. Title: Reductive Dechlorination of Sediment-Sorbed Polychlorinated Biphenyls by Vitamin B12s. Abstract approved.:---

approved.:--Sandra L. Woods The reductive dechlorination of chlorobiphenyls in sediment by titanium(III) citrate-reduced vitamin Bus was studied in batch reactors. Long term ampoule studies demonstrated reductive dechlorination of sediment-sorbed 2,3,4,5,6-pentachlorobiphenyl (2,3,4,5,6-PeCB) to tetra-, tri-, di-, and monochlorobiphenyl products. Over 50% chlorine removal was observed over 160 ...
